At the Auglaize River Dam just south of Defiance, Ohio, Advanced Rehabilitation Technology (ART) completed a unique restoration project at the historic Auglaize Hydroelectric Plant. Originally constructed in 1912, the dam has undergone various ownership changes and upgrades, and today contributes approximately 4% of Bryan, Ohio’s power. With six generating units, the plant requires a well-maintained structure to ensure operational safety and efficiency.

The Project Scope

ART was brought in to address deteriorating concrete on the dam’s exterior walls. The structure had several areas where concrete was falling away, creating openings that could lead to further degradation. ART had previously coated half of the dam’s exterior wall in the summer of 2023, building a strong relationship with the facility’s operators who were impressed with the durability of ART’s solution. Based on this success, ART returned in the fall of 2024 to complete additional repairs on the wall, aiming to prevent further erosion and preserve the structural integrity of this critical energy resource.

The Application Process

Using the OBIC Armor System, which consists of OBIC 1306 closed-cell foam sandwiched between two layers of OBIC 1000, ART applied protective coatings to multiple sections of the dam wall. A grey finishing color was specifically chosen to blend naturally with the concrete and resist UV fading over time, ensuring both a functional and aesthetic solution.

To complete the project, ART relied on a crane to lift team members and equipment into place. This required careful coordination: one technician applied the spray coating from the crane’s basket, while other team members managed hoses and equipment from the ground and the top of the wall. The unique setup presented a challenge for one crew member with a fear of heights, but teamwork and adaptability enabled the job to proceed smoothly.

The Impact

The entire project took one day to complete, with the hydroelectric plant remaining fully operational throughout. ART’s protective coating will prevent further concrete erosion, safeguarding the dam from future deterioration and reducing maintenance needs. The facility’s operators expressed satisfaction with the results, reinforcing ART’s position as a trusted partner in infrastructure protection.
